Getting Around DC

The WMATA Metrorail is the second busiest rapid transit system in the US with 98 stations across DC, Virginia, and Maryland. Six color-coded lines (Red, Blue, Orange, Yellow, Green, Silver) connect the entire region.

Payment: Use a SmarTrip card (from fare machines) or tap a contactless credit/debit card. Passes available for 1, 3, or 7 days.

Hours: Mon-Thu 5 AM - 12 AM, Fri 5 AM - 2 AM, Sat 6 AM - 2 AM, Sun 6 AM - 12 AM.

Healthcare

DC Healthcare Alliance provides health insurance coverage to all eligible DC residents regardless of immigration status. Some residents can get coverage for as little as $11/month through DC Health Link.

Local Tips
Metro etiquette: stand right, walk left on escalators. Let passengers exit before boarding. Look for tall brown columns with "M" to find station entrances. DC Metrobus is also extensive and useful for areas not served by rail.
