Steps to Start a Business
- Choose your business structure: LLC (Limited Liability Company) is the most common for small businesses
- Register your business with the state
- Get an EIN (Employer Identification Number) from the IRS - free and takes minutes online
- Get local permits from your city/municipality
- Open a business bank account
Forming an LLC in New Jersey
- File Certificate of Formation with NJ Division of Revenue - $125 fee
- Register for NJ taxes (NJ-REG) within 60 days
- Must have a registered agent with a physical NJ address
Forming an LLC in New York
- File Articles of Organization with NY Dept. of State - $200 fee
- NY requires publication in two newspapers for six weeks (additional cost)
- Must adopt a written Operating Agreement within 90 days
